Google Algorithm Updates (2024-2019) History of SERP Changes

Recent algorithm updates have targeted Spam, Reviews, and (un)helpful content. Then there are the Core Updates that affect all serps. In the past, there have been Medic, YMYL, Panda, and Penguin updates.

There have been 36 significant Google algorithm updates in the past four years. The frequency has increased, from just four updates in 2020 to 10 in 2022. And the March 2024 update (still running) is changing the search landscape.

Understanding what each update targeted and when it happened is key to correcting any loss of ranking and traffic.

Here’s how we can help improve your SEO.

Other Notable Google Updates (15)

In the past, Google used to give fun names to their notable updates. These include:

  1. Penguin
  2. Panda
  3. EMD (Exact Match Domain) Update
  4. RankBrain
  5. Page Layout Algorithm
  6. Florida
  7. Big Daddy
  8. Venice Update
  9. Payday
  10. Vince
  11. Caffeine
  12. Jagger
  13. Pigeon
  14. Hummingbird
  15. Mobilegeddon

More recently, Google has been boring names to these notable changes to the serps. Because of the frequency of updates, a date/description name works better than a fun, brandable title.

I’ll be updating this guide with updates from previous years. Along with specifics of what each Google update targeted and what sites were primarily affected.
